WASTE by BOB ESHUIS
EXHIBITION CURATOR · PHOTO IS:RAEL · IN COLLABORATION WITH THE NETHERLANDDS EMBASSY Dutch still-life paintings from the 17th century, known for their abundance of lavish objects and food, evolved into a genre called "Vanitas." These philosophical paintings criticized the frivolity and emptiness of wealth, using symbols like decaying fruits, wilting flowers, silverware, and skulls to convey the fleeting nature of life. Bob Eshuis, a Dutch photographer, captures contemporary waste in compositions resembling traditional Vanitas paintings. By juxtaposing mundane objects in an extravagant light, Eshuis highlights the misleading nature of materialism. His work connects different artistic mediums while reviving the criticism of ostentatiousness and the lasting impact of disposable waste in the modern world.
